Mon Visage

Daphne feddei, handmade paper, acrylic light box, 44 × 109 cm, 2025

Using the plant Daphne feddei, traditionally employed in a six-hundred-year- old papermaking craft in western Yunnan, this work explores the isomorphic relationship between language, botany, and identity. Though unrelated to Broussonetia papyrifera, the plant was given its name by Han migrants during the Ming dynasty and came to be known locally as "Goupi" (paper bark). This renaming and continuity reflect how historical memory is shaped by migration, colonial dynamics, and the appropriation of knowledge.

Through stretching the fibers and twisting them into text, the piece forms the phrase “visage” (face) — the use of French is also responds to the artist’s personal experience of cultural migration. The work points to the unstitched seams between memory, body, and language.
